Sheep with naturally coloured wool are found occasionally in most breeds. In New Zealand, high-quality coloured sheep are often kept for their wool, which has both commercial and handcraft uses. Among the most favoured breeds are Merino, Romney, Corriedale, Polwarth and English Leicester, though interest in other breeds such as Gotland and Arapawa is increasing.
To encourage breeding, owning and improvement of all breeds of black and coloured sheep in NZ, and the production of good wool suitable for handcraft uses. Coloured sheep have always been found in small numbers in all breeds, but it wasn't until there was an interest in natural coloured fibres in New Zealand in the 1970s that an organisation was formed to research their genetics and market their wool. The New Zealand Sheepbreeders' Association administers the affairs for those breeds of sheep currently under its umbrella whilst actively promoting the stud breeding sheep industry.'.
