They corrected it when he got to Earth, but what if they stuck to their guns and he transformed into his Oozaru Great. This occurred only in the anime, as at the time Vegeta was introduced in the anime, the Dragon Ball manga had not yet officially released a full colored Vegeta for the animators to take reference on when adapting Vegeta into the anime, so Toei Animation guessed his colors.
