I thought it isn't possible as at most you can only use the custom name tag to rename things! Is there a way to colour and bold item names in vanilla Minecraft? External programs are OK. Oh, and the wiki page of formatting codes doesn't really do much. Formatting codes (also known as color codes) add color and modifications to text in-game.

Text in Minecraft can be formatted with the section sign (ยง). This works in anvil renaming and sign text, but I believe this also works in resource packs. So if you know how to edit item names in resource packs or language packs, you can permanently change the color of specific item names. EDIT: Formatting errors (ironically).
