These are the colors of the Liturgical Year. In the Catholic Church, each season has a color and each color has a meaning. Here is the guide to the colors of the Liturgical Year and what they mean.
Used twice during Holy Week (Palm Sunday and Good Friday), red is associated with passion and love in the world at large. Red is the liturgical color for exactly this reason, to help drive home the point that Jesus loved us to death. Likewise Metallic Gold can be used for gold or yellow.
While some traditions (Roman Catholic, for example) still use for purple for Advent, there is a trend to use a bluish violet for Advent and deep red violet for Lent. In most traditions, the sanctuary cross is draped in color only during Lent (purple), Good Friday (black), and Easter (white). The Passion, blood, fire, God's Love, martyrdomRed is the color of blood and represents the burning love of the Holy Spirit.
Red vestments are worn on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, all feasts of Our Lord's Passion, on Pentecost and on the feast days of martyrs. Note: Red is the color of Cardinals' non. During Good Friday, or even as soon as Maundy Thursday, a switch is made to black, or rarely no color.
This change can be made in connection with a Good Friday service to mark the death of Christ. On the evening of Holy Saturday (Easter vigil), or certainly come Easter Sunday, white or gold are used to celebrate the resurrection. If you wish to wear the liturgical colors during the Holy Week, they are: Palm Sunday.
Good Friday: The Passion and Death of Our Lord Feast Day: Friday of Holy Week (Two days before Easter) Liturgical Color: Red (Symbolizing Christ's Passion and Sacrificial Love) Significance: Commemorates the suffering, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ for the redemption of the world.
