He was the last president born in a log cabin, and he loved to read books. A year later, Garfield entered politics as a Republican, after campaigning for the party's antislavery platform in Ohio. He married Lucretia Rudolph in 1858 and, in 1860, was admitted to practice law while serving as an Ohio State Senator (1859-1861).
Thus, on March 20th, 1881, Garfield, his wife, his mother, four sons and a daughter (depicted below) moved into the White House. The James A. Garfield family beneath the watchful eyes of Washington and Lincoln.
