Breakfast by the Sea - After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went. Jesus directed them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat, resulting in a miraculous fish catch.
Jesus cooked breakfast for these followers on the beach and then provided Peter with a new opportunity to follow Him and care for others in the future. Peter had previously denied Jesus, but now Jesus says to "feed my sheep.". The expression, "By hook or by crook," you may be surprised to learn, originated from the 21st chapter of the Gospel of John.
A hook is the symbol of a fisherman, while a crook is the symbol of a shepherd. Here then in this chapter are symbolized the two ministries of the church: fishing and shepherding. That is how the work of God goes.
Tell the children that in today's Bible story Jesus makes his friends, the disciples, breakfast on the beach. Ask them to listen and discover what Jesus made for breakfast. Story: Have the children close their eyes and imagine being at the beach early in the morning.
If you like, ask them what they might see and hear. Near the end of the gospel of John, (in John 21:1-14), we find a story where, some days after Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, seven of Jesus's disciples have travelled north from Jerusalem to the sea of Galilee. At Peter's suggestion they have all gone out in his boat to fish.
They fish all night, but have no luck, and catch nothing. They are fairly close to the shore, and as the early. The breakfast on the shore is a moment of restoration and commissioning, particularly for Peter, who would soon be reinstated and charged with shepherding Jesus' flock (John 21:15-19).
Symbolism and Imagery: The charcoal fire may evoke memories of Peter's denial of Jesus (John 18:18), setting the stage for his forthcoming restoration. As Jesus cooked breakfast on the beach for his disciples, he communicated the importance of rest, restoration, and his sovereignty. After Jesus tells them to cast the net on the other side of the boat, they have a net full of 153 fish! Jesus then "sets the table" and serves them breakfast on the beach.
Jesus has appeared and the disciples haul in a miraculous catch of fish. Jesus cooks breakfast and offers the disciples fish and bread. At this point, the story turns into a conversation between Jesus and Peter.
Jesus asked Peter if he loves him. In fact, Jesus asks Peter this question three times. Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples -Jesus later appeared to his disciples along the shore of Lake Tiberias.
Simon Peter, Thomas the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, and the brothers James and John, were there, together with two other disciples. Early the next morning Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize who he was.
