Raggedy Ann & Andy Dolls - History Raggedy Ann was the creation of author and illustrator Johnny Gruelle. Gruelle was born in 1880 in Illinois and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the early 1900s, he found an old, handmade rag doll in the family attic and was inspired by it.
