Urbanspoon is used by millions of App Store users every week to find nearby restaurants with honest restaurant ratings and reviews by consumers and food. That was the message on Zomato's Facebook page today, announcing it had shut down Urbanspoon after acquiring the Seattle-based restaurant reviews site for roughly $60 million earlier this year. Brand New: New Logo for Urbanspoon
The Urbanspoon app began life less than a decade ago, when a couple of Seattle entrepreneurs, Ethan Lowry and Adam Doppelt, teamed up to locate and identify nearby restaurants: just shake your iPhone and you'd get a roster of taco stands, or pizza parlors, or burger bars. Now, UrbanSpoon is available as an app on iPhone, and I have to complement the team on a very cleverly designed, fun, and ultimately very usefull application. The signature page of the app is a slot machine type interface, where you shake the iPhone and the app picks a restaurant randomly.
We've been getting tons of feedback since we switched Urbanspoon to Zomato, and some of the things have really got us thinking. We took a step back to take a good look at our product, and found there were some fundamental issues that needed to be addressed. The Zomato app, we noticed, had become complicated and unintuitive for our users over time.

So we decided to go back to the drawing. But Urbanspoon, as we know it, will soon be a thing of the past: Zomato, an up and coming New Delhi-based restaurant discovery site, has acquired the app from previous parent company IAC as its way of entering the US market. Urbanspoon is used by millions of App Store users every week to find nearby restaurants with honest restaurant ratings and reviews by consumers and food critics.
