Color Splash has very few interesting localized plots. Most of CS's map sections I saw weren't story-driven, but focused rather on action and adventure and exploration. And this is the core reason why CS is my least favorite paper mario game: it prioritizes exploration and puzzle.

Color Splash uses parts of the action. My problem with Color Splash isn't just the plot, and adding a "deeper plot" won't fix anything. Paper Mario's plot was simple.
TTYD was just Peach Kidnapped but by Satanist. It wasn't super deep. You can (and in some cases for both SS and CS, they have) had plenty of character and its own personality without having unique characters.
