Insignia worn in the British Fire and Rescue Service At the turn of the century the Fire Brigade was a branch of the the Police Force (thus fire bobby) and the rank structure was that of police. When the Fire Service was made independent of the police a new rank structure and markings was designed for the uniform which was revamped in 1960's. Ranks and roles in the Service Firefighters and officers wear helmets at incidents and shoulder markings on their uniforms (known as epaulettes) to show their rank.

Breathing apparatus was first introduced in 1875. I've noticed a couple of services down south (Cambs, Devon & Somerset, see below) have FF's wearing yellow helmets with single stripes on them like the old Leading Firefighter rank would. Is anyone from/familiar with services that do this able to shed light on these FF's?
