1 Samuel 17:42-47 David ran toward Goliath. He quickly threw a stone with his sling. The stone hit Goliath in the forehead, and the giant man fell to the ground.
The Lord helped David defeat Goliath without a sword or armor. 1 Samuel 17:48-50 When the Philistines saw that Goliath was dead, they ran away in fear. The Israelites won the battle.
The author of the text goes on to illustrate Goliath as a manifestation of the world: his equipment is listed as six items, he is six cubits (and a span) tall, his spearhead weighs six hundred shekels (1 Samuel 17:4-7). The number six is a number that represents deficit, imperfection, or a falling short of completion. David had courage to fight Goliath, even when it seemed he would fail.
David had faith in the Lord and he was able to succeed at a seemingly impossible task. Each of us will experience Goliath sized trials, troubles, and challenges. David he walked toward Goliath the Philistine. Goliath started walking towards David. There was a man in front of Goliath who carried a shield for him.
When Goliath got close enough to see David, he got upset because David was just a young person. He looked at David's staff and slingshot and said, "Am I a dog that you come to beat me with sticks?". David, a teenager whose life is told in the Old Testament, killed Goliath armed only with a slingshot and faith.

Review the story of David and Goliath with the children (see " David and Goliath " in Old Testament Stories), and let them take turns acting out the story. Prompt the child pretending to be Goliath to say, "Give me a man, that we may fight together" (1 Samuel 17:10).
