Hi, I was just wondering if a faint print line on the backs of cards like this would affect the grade? A card with a print line will most likely drop to a 9, with severe ones (multiple print lines) dropping to 8. I've seen cards graded CGC 9.5 with a print line, but when it was cross-over to PSA, it failed to get a 10. For collectors, understanding print lines-what they are, how they occur, and why they exist-can lead to a deeper appreciation of the cards they collect.
While print lines may impact the value and grade of a card, they are also part of what makes each card unique. I just purchased this card off eBay. The card looks perfectly authentic, but there's a blue dashed/dotted line that runs horizontally through the middle of the back of the card (see attached image, you'll need to click on the image to see the line).
The card is Piers (Full Art) #187 from. Unfortunately, print lines will affect grading. Actually, any defect on the card will influence its grade.
Generally if a specific card has a reoccurring issue throughout its print, it would be overlooked. These Pikachu promos all had print lines. Roller damage from the packaging process will typically but not always show as two vertical indentations on both the front and back of the card.
Some defects affect a large portion of the print run but not the entirety, such as Magic Unlimited Edition cards with heavy roller lines, which will be scrutinized more than a defect that affects every. I have seen print/roller lines on the front/back of the card stock. I usually have seen physical roller lines more on early MTG cards, but have seen them on the odd Pokemon card as well.
As others mentioned, it's most noticeable on holos and the severity can also vary. How bad are print lines? GRADINGWhen you click links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. You should assume that if you click a link to eBay on blowoutforums.com, you are clicking on an affiliate link and Blowout Cards could receive. Print lines negatively affect the grade, they are a misprint but not desirable as they take away from the aesthetic beauty of the card. Still, it's a very rare card you have there so getting it graded isn't a bad idea.
