I suspect that's why the change was made in the first place beginning with the in-game SMB2 sprites (as opposed to the character art, which stayed with red/green overalls until they were reworked for Super Mario Advance). With the tech of the day, maybe it was harsher on the eyes than the more subdued blue overalls.
I believe it was a overbalance of color usage in favor of red, changing it in reverse to balance the color scheme, and be more relatable to people as a character.
