POSSIBLY THE EARLIEST visual representation of Jesus of Nazareth is a crude drawing scratched on the wall of a Roman house, dubbed by scholars the "Alexamenos graffito." It shows a man in profile gesturing toward a donkey-headed figure on a cross. Beneath it, the anonymous artist has written, "Alexamenos worships his god." Around 200 AD. The oldest known pictorial representation of the crucifixion of Jesus is not a traditional painting but rather a graffito known as the "Alexamenos graffito," which dates back to the 2nd century CE.

The reference to donkey-worship comes from a story recounted by the Roman historian Tacitus, in which a group of Jews, expelled from Egypt, wandered through the desert, exhausted and dying of thirst, until they were led to water by a herd of wild asses. In turn, they started worshipping the animal that delivered them. The German word Palmesel (palm donkey) refers to the statue of Jesus on a donkey, mounted on a wheeled platform, which was part of Palm Sunday processions in many German-speaking regions until the Reformation.
These processions, which reenacted Christ's entry into Jerusalem mounted on a donkey, were lively pageants in which hymns were sung, palms strewn, and clothes spread on the ground. Beginning as early as the tenth century, sculptures depicting Jesus on the back of a donkey were carried or rolled through towns across German-speaking lands in a reenactment of his entry into Jerusalem on the Sunday before Easter, known as Palm Sunday. Their use on this holy day lent the objects their German name: Palmesel, or Palm Donkey.
