Sheep Color Variations

Sheep can come in a number of different shades of various colors including white, black, red, cream, gray, and brown. They can be solid or have an interesting pattern of colors on their coats of wool or hair. It really all depends on their breed, bloodline, and genetics.

Genetics play the main role in determining what color a sheep will be and, over the years, sheep breeders have finely tuned. There are at least six primary sheep colors, from brown to red to cream to gray. Some sheep have multiple colors (a white body and black head, for example).

Sheep

In sheep, color, pattern and spotting are codominant to each other and all three can be seen on the same sheep: a black piebald badger. An example of codominance between patterns would be a badger/reverse badger sheep. The incredible diversity of sheep colors is reflected in the vast array of sheep breeds that exist worldwide.

Colors of domestic sheep range from pure white to dark chocolate brown, and even spotted or piebald.

The names used to describe markings are the original ones used by the Shetland Islanders to describe their sheep. Hair sheep have a shorter, coarser coat than wool sheep, which are bred for their long, soft wool. Within these categories, there are many sub-breeds and variations, each with its own distinct coat color.
