Forecast says: snow on Pluto. Images collected by the New Horizons spacecraft show " exotic snowcapped mountains " in the southeast corner of the Cthulhu Regio, a dark stretch of the dwarf planet approximately the size of Alaska, according to NASA. Comparing the spectral data with images of Pluto shows the water ice locations match areas that appear primarily red in color.
Pluto has snow-capped mountains covered in methane frost, and although they look similar to snowy mountain chains on Earth, these mountains gather snow in a way entirely unlike anywhere else in. Pluto, a dwarf planet, exhibits a captivating array of colors, ranging from pale white to dark red, due to the complex interactions between its surface composition and the feeble sunlight it receives. Nitrogen ice dominates the surface of Pluto, which is a key factor in defining its albedo or overall brightness, while methane frost contributes to the planet's distinct reddish hues.

The result is that Pluto is dominated by downslope winds. That's why its snow formation is so puzzling. It's completely different than Earth, where air cools as it rises, and deposits its moisture as snow on mountains.
The team of researchers found that Pluto's atmosphere circulates in such a way that methane is concentrated at higher altitudes. What color is Pluto's snow?
