Cat 3 Wiring Color Code
We look at the 568A and 568B color codes, what they mean, and why they're important. Color coding for 25 pair cablesColor coding for 25 pair cables. The CAT 3 Cable can also be used for the RJ-14 Pinout with the same color code as the CAT5 and CAT6.
The internal pairs to the pinout are trasmit and recieve (1 and 1), while the 2 side pairs (2 and 2) are your power. Another way of remembering the color coding is to simply switch the Green set of wires in place with the Orange set of wires. Specifically, switch the solid Green (G) with the solid Orange, and switch the green/white with the orange/white.

The wires are typically punched down onto the pins using a punch-down tool, ensuring a secure connection. FOR CABLES LARGER THAN 25 PAIRS, CABLES ARE MANUFACTURED IN GROUPS WITH DIFFERENT BINDER COLORS. The color coding you refer to has nothing to do with the wire being CAT 3.
Instead of the solid-color color code of quad wire, it is a band-striped color code. In this scheme, there are 5 band/stripe colors and 5 binder colors which can be used to identify up to 25 pairs.
