- The chess pieces represent each of the Strawhats excluding Sanji, Zoro, Jinbe and Usopp: we have Robin as the pawns, Franky as the towers, Chopper as the knights, Nami as the queen and Luffy as the king. In the One Piece world it seems like the second strongest on the crew is the first mate (Shiryu is a perfect example of a late joiner who was just second strongest), there's some debate about Sanji and Zoro's power levels being similar and they may be close, but Zoro always fights the second strongest villian and I think that cements it. Were you also very disappointed when finding out every human character in the One Piece manga is colored with the EXACT same pale skin tone? Toei spoiled us in that aspect, at least pre-timeskip (although some colors were maintained post) and I can never fully enjoy Oda's colored art to its full extent, personally.
being so used to the anime version of these characters in my head. Also it seems he was going to draw Luffy as the DJ at first but then changed it to Sanji. I wonder if this might mean something, he does like to foreshadow stuffs in the cover page.
