There are indeed white buttercups! However, it's important to note that these white buttercups are not actually from the Ranunculus family like the typical yellow buttercups that we are more familiar with. Instead, they belong to a different botanical genus called Beesia. The familiar and widespread buttercup of gardens throughout Northern Europe (and introduced elsewhere) is the creeping buttercup Ranunculus repens, which has extremely tough and tenacious roots.

Two other species are also widespread, the bulbous buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus and the much taller meadow buttercup Ranunculus acris. It is similar in appearance to another aquatic plant, Ranunculus flabellaris (Yellow Water Buttercup), except the latter species has yellow flowers. In North America, there are at least two varieties of White Water Buttercup: Ranunculus aquatilis aquatilis and Ranunculus aquatilis diffusus.
