While I can't find anything official and it isn't supported by anything in canon beyond my own observations, this is my headcanon about the TIE colorizations: grey TIEs are Imperial Army fighters, attached to bases such as the Death Star and Scarif bases. The TIE/ln space superiority starfighter, commonly referred to as the TIE/LN starfighter, TIE/line starfighter, TIE Fighter or T/F, was the signature starfighter of the Galactic Empire and symbol of its superiority.
It was seen in massive numbers throughout most of the Galactic Civil War and onward. Occasionally, due to their distinct shape, Rebel and New Republic pilots referred to the craft. Morning all, I've received a Bandai X-Wing and TIE for Christmas and, being on such a massive Star Wars binge at the moment, can't wait to get stuck into them.
My only issue is knowing what colours to paint them. Reading around, there seems to be a bit of a conflict of opinion, but I'd appreciate any further suggestions for both the interior colours and exterior greys on both fighters. Thanks.
A few years ago, one of the SW model guys mentioned that the initial color of the TIE fighter was a shade of maroon. I thought this was an interesting choice as everything in the movie appears to be a different shade of gray or off white.
