Aside from libgen I recommend using sci. And once I've found a book and I want to download it, how do I know it's a safe file? How do I check it and open it safely. I downloaded some books yesterday, most were from github, but there was 2 that I downloaded from z library (or something starting with z) and I just thought to myself I need to do this in a safer manner.
Thanks in advance! You ultimately cannot tell if a PDF file is 100% safe. Best you can do if that's something that worries you is run it in a secure PDF viewer, a sandbox or virtual machine with no networking altogether. I need a pdf online editor that won't scam me I don't mind paying for a week access fee.

PDF drive, as mentioned. Also for more recent pop culture books: PDF Duck, All Books World, Today Novels And of course, there's still Gutenberg, Archive.org's library, and Library Genesis. If you're after manga, you can use Manganato, and ZipComics has many western graphic novel series.

To start off, DuckDuckGo is "safe" - much safer (and more private!) compared to Google or Bing in its raw form.
