Cafe Reading Program
CAFE The Literacy CAFE System provides teachers with a way to maximize student understanding of the four key components of successful reading through the use of the CAFE Menu. CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. The program has expanded to serve more than 700 children each year.
With three mobile classrooms and additional sites in Communities in Schools, area churches, we now serve 24 program sites in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Rolesville, and Knightdale. This Café Menu set has everything you need to teach the Café Menu in the classroom. The sisters who are responsible for creating the Daily Five, have also created a reading Cafe menu that can be used to teach Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary.

The CAFÉ reading instruction program is a pedagogical program which is designed to support teachers providing comprehensive instruction of all four reading practices in a classroom environment. It was designed by two teachers, Gail Boushey and Jean Moser, and, is based upon their classroom experiences.

The CAFE system, based on research into the habits of proficient readers, is an acronym for Comprehension,Accuracy,Fluency, andExpanding vocabulary. The CAFE reading program relies heavily on students being independently engaged in reading and writing tasks whilst the teacher conferences with individuals and small groups.
This type of autonomous classroom environment is achievable with young children but it requires clear articulation of the necessary behaviours and stamina.
