But, then that begs the question, why wasn't vivi darkskinned? If Zoro and Robin got lighter because they weren't near the sun, Vivi should have been at least pre-time skip Robins shade. Same with all of the women from Shandoria, an inherently darker people (both Shandorians and Alabastians) have pale skinned women. Yeah, the Robin threads posted today have a few people confused as to "why she turned white" or accusing Oda of turning her white post-timeskip.
It's just one of the many unfortunate side effects of the anime mixing up the plot pot, as per usual. Many people always wonder why they made Robin white after the timeskip. Well Robin was never dark-skinned in the manga.
That was an anime-only decision but she was always white, canonically speaking. Is there an explanation as to why Robin, Zoro and Usopp have lighter skin after the time skip? It's just something that really throws me off. everyone talks about Robin getting whitewashed, but nobody mentions how Zoro got Whitewashed also.
Maybe because Zoro trained for 2 years in a gloomy and dark place, it made his skin white. Like Robin, she is tanned back in Alabasta, a desert, but she got a whiter skin after she had gone in Baltigo for 2 years. Robin's (and Zoro's) tan was only a thing in the anime, in the manga (colored manga, volume covers and color spreads) she is white.
They "fixed" this after the timeskip. Robin Zoro and Franky spent their time on islands with colder weather and where the sun doesn't show much so maybe that's why their tans faded away.
