Pretty much yeah, there's no strict formula to it. On one hand Sonic's blue gets inverted to yellow and Scourge's green inverts to purple. However, Shadow's black fur doesn't turn white it turns cream, and Knuckles/Tails just turns a lighter shade of their primary colour.
