God told Moses to go before the people, taking the elders or the leaders with him, to take his rod that he had used to strike the Red Sea in his hand, and to stand by the rock in a place called Horeb. God stood with Moses as he hit the rock and water came out of the rock. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Have the children look up 1 Corinthians 10:4. Remind them that the first time the Israelites complained to Moses for lack of water (see Exodus 17) they were in the same location. At that time, they charged Moses and were prepared to kill him.
God instructed Moses to strike the rock rather than judge the people. That was a foreshadowing of God receiving the judgment for our sin.
