The final color of the goat is due to the interaction of eumelanin (black/brown), pheomelanin (red brown/tan/cream/white), and white spotting (white). It takes practice to see every goat as some combination of these, but this approach is very helpful in figuring out what genes a goat is expressing.

The tan markings vary in color from cream (almost white) to tan to dark brown. The tan areas usually have light skin pigment. You will notice pink to peach colored skin around the muzzle, lips, eyes, ears, and feet on most swiss marked goats, especially kids.
Hooves are white instead of black. Swiss marked is also known as the Toggenburg pattern. This color ranges from a very dark, "midnight" black to a reddish-black that almost looks brown.
