The two offer sacrifice to the Lord, as in the three pictures at right. God accepts Abel's sacrifice but not Cain's, so in his anger Cain slays his brother. He is then condemned to a life as a vagabond and is finally killed by one of his descendants.

At the right Abel kneels in prayer before the small square altar on which the flame of his offering mounts straight heavenward, while his brother Cain, kneeling at left center, turns in dismay from his altar where the flames of his crop-offering do not mount.
