A palette swap, also known as a color swap, alternate palette, and alternate color, [citation needed] appears in the Super Mario franchise as a form of changing the colors of the player characters. This is often employed to differentiate multiple players playing as the same character, or simply for cosmetic effect.
A palette swap is a term referring to cosmetic, and sometimes gameplay, differences between characters in the Mario franchise and Super Smash Bros. series, the latter naming it color change by default. To a lesser extent, palette swaps can also apply to objects.

This is the first instance of a palette swap in the Mario franchise, because Luigi has the same base appearance as Mario, but is. Mario (SSB, 1999). Use D-pad down to change mario's colour to Luigi, D-pad up for Waluigi, D. Is merica mario going to get his own colors with the costume or is it a one color costume? Since it's based off of a specific outfit based on the U.S. flag and it's colors, I personally don't see it having palette swaps.
